Ondansetron
Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that acts both centrally and peripherally to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting. Centrally, it works by blocking and/or antagonizing serotonin receptors in the brain that mediate the sensation of nausea. Peripherally, ondansetron works through the vagus nerve, which can sense nausea and vomiting triggers in the GI tract. Most commonly, ondansetron is administered prior to surgery, radiation therapy, or cancer chemotherapy, to reduce nausea and vomiting brought on by these treatments.
